A Message from Mr. Kosal:
MMS is All Heart! This is Mr. Kosal, proud MMS principal. Our first round of End of Grade (EOG) testing is just about in the books! Science 8 still tests on Monday, but 6th & 7th grade students have taken their math + reading tests. Parents: you'll receive Proficient / Not Proficient notices about Math & Reading EOGs via Parent Square on Monday morning (8th grade parents -- science scores are released next Fall because of new standards + test).
Next week, MMS plans to remediate, reteach, and then Re-test student that did not initially pass the EOG on round one. There is no penalty for students to re-test; they keep the higher of the two scores in their PowerSchool student records. Many of our students are so very close!... just a few points away from passing (some for the first time ever!). Let's help encourage our Red Imps to give it one more solid try before summer!
See below for more details and please reach out to Mr. Kosal (principal) with any questions. Here's what you'll find in this week's newsletter:
- EOG re-testing & remediation updates
- 7th / 8th grade Dance class performances -- tonight!
- EOY Awards Ceremonies
- Action Needed: Bus transportation form for '25-26
- Wear GREEN on Friday, May 15th (Mental Health Awareness month)
- Updates to MMS Cheerleading try out dates
- MHS basketball camp sign-up
- CTE summer camp opportunities
- Launch for weekend:
- and more!
If you have any questions or concerns, please email our administration team or call the MMS front office.
Mr. Kosal, MMS principal / 6th grade (pkosal@mgsd.k12.nc.us)
Dr. Browning, assistant principal / 7th grade (mbrowning@mgsd.k12.nc.us)
Ms. Richardson, assistant principal / 8th grade (tabitharichardson@mgsd.k12.nc.us)
Mr. Bost, assistant principal intern (ronbost@mgsd.k12.nc.us)
Ms. Miller, athletic director (dedramiller@mgsd.k12.nc.us)

UPDATE: need-to-knows about EOGs + re-testing
- Parents will be notified of their students' End of Grade test scores on Monday, May 12th.
-
Students that DO NOT pass the EOG on the first attempt will all Remediate / Retest. There is no penalty whatsoever for student re-testing: their higher EOG score will be recorded in their school records. However, parents will have the ability to OPT OUT of retesting for their student. The district's Opt Out form will be included with EOG score reports on Monday, 5/12.
- Parents have until 12:00pm on Tuesday, May 13th, to OPT OUT of re-testing for their child. If their child is at school during re-testing days, that student will work on Enrichment activities & prepare for the next grade level.
- Remediation / Enrichment activities will be provided for all students on 5/12 and 5/13, regardless of passing the first attempt or not. We expect all students to continue to learn and grow, even if it's only to prepare for next year!
- Re-testing for Math will occur on Wednesday, 5/14. Re-testing for ELA will occur on Thursday, 5/15 for 6th & 8th graders, but on 5/16 for 7th graders.
- Students must have taken each required EOG test at least once before participating in End of Year Field Trips or Celebrations activities.
