How to alert MMS of student absence:

The email address for parents to alert MMS about student absences is:

Parents can upload doctor's notes as well. This process helps to avoid lost excuse notes!

Clarity on Excused / Unexcused student attendance for MMS families:

Parents should provide documentation when requesting a student absence from school be Excused. Documentation from doctors' offices etc. is always accepted. Examples of lawful (excused) absences are:
  • 1A - Illness or Injury
  • 1B - Medical or dental appointment
  • 1C - Death in family
  • 1E - Court proceedings
  • 1G - Educational Opportunity (must follow MGSD K-8 ed. opp. form posted below)

Parent-written excuse notes may also be accepted, within limits. *All parent requests for excused absences are subject to review and can be denied by the principal according to North Carolina's attendance regulations.  10 parent-written excuse notes (i.e. "mommy notes") is the maximum that will be accepted by MMS over the course of the 2026-27 school year to excuse a student's absence from school. MMS will accept these notes a maximum of three days after the student returns to school.

Any additional parent-written excuse notes beyond the 10 limit will be coded as Unexcused unless documentation from a dr. office, etc. is provided.

Regardless of reason, students are responsible for class assignments missed when they are absent from class. Students should speak with their teachers to understand what is due and when if they are absent. The due date for make-up work assignments will be, at a minimum, the number of days the student is absent. See our MMS Parent / Student Handbook for more information.

Please partner with us at MMS in bringing your child on time to school each day -- once they're here, we can work wonders! Reach out to Principal Kosal with any questions (pkosal@mgsd.k12.nc.us).
Ed. Opportunity request form
Note: Students may have up to a maximum of 3 days per school year excused to take advantage of valid educational opportunities. Prior approval from either the Principal is required. Absences that are classified as a valid educational opportunity will be coded as “excused” whereas others will be coded as “unexcused.”

To make a request for prior approval, submit the above form to the Principal two weeks before the absence(s). The student is responsible for completing all missed work in addition to submitting a Student Educational Assignment as approved by the Principal in order to have the
absence coded as “excused.” All projects are due within 5 days of the student’s return to school.

Support resources for Students + Families:

Counselor Request Form: We wanted to share the Request to See a Counselor form with parents. (Students will have access to this link in Canvas as well.). Once a student completes the form either Ms. White or Ms. Buff (school counselors) will have the student called to the office. We're here to help!

MMS Resources Form: There are several resources available to our students and families. If a student is in need of the following, a parent or guardian can complete the form linked above:
  • a weekend food bag,
  • a toiletry bag,
  • a birthday bag,
  • join Rainbow Kidz (grief counseling) - read more here, or
  • school-based therapy services (Children's Hope Alliance is the provider)
One big change this year is that we no longer have access to give out shoes to students. The program has been stopped at the company level. If this changes in the future, we will let you and parents know.

**Please message either Ms. White or Ms. Buff if you'd like help for your student / family in any of the above areas. We are here to help!
