We are #All Heart at Mooresville Middle!

September 4, 2026

MMS is All Heart!

We at MMS are incredibly proud of our students' & teachers' success from last year's End of Grade assessments! Here are some of the highlights from the North Carolina school report card results (shared this week):

  • Mooresville Middle School earned the #1 ranking for math growth in Iredell County!
  • MGSD students ranked in the top 5 across North Carolina for achievement in Math 8.
  • Mooresville Middle School earned a B grade on our NC school report card for the third straight year (only times in school history)
  • MGSD is one of only 3 school districts in NC where every school met state growth targets and zero schools were identified as low-performing!
  • MGSD achieved the top four-year cohort graduation rate in the state.

Thank you, parents, for all your support of  Mooresville Middle School, our staff, and the work we do each day to help kids grow!

Mr. Kosal, MMS principal / 6th grade (pkosal@mgsd.k12.nc.us)
Dr. Browning, assistant principal / 7th grade (mbrowning@mgsd.k12.nc.us)
Mr. Bost, assistant principal / 8th grade (ronbost@mgsd.k12.nc.us)
Ms. Hoppers, athletic director (alexishoppers@mgsd.k12.nc.us)

chocolate fundraiser
Dear MMS Parents,

We are excited to announce that our students will be participating in a Chocolate Fundraiser throughout September! Be on the lookout for the Flyer that is coming home with your student.

A signed permission slip is required before your child can receive a fundraising box. Please review the permission slip, sign it, and return it to school.

Our goal with this fundraiser is to add technology to our school campus and supplies & gifts for our students and staff in December.

Thank you for supporting our students and helping make this fundraiser a success! Your participation and support are greatly appreciated.

How to alert MMS of student absence:

The email address for parents to alert MMS about student absences is:

Parents can upload doctor's notes as well. This process helps to avoid lost excuse notes!
form to request Ed. Opportunity
Note: Students may have up to a maximum of 3 days per school year excused to take advantage of valid educational opportunities. Prior approval from either the Principal is required. Absences that are classified as a valid educational opportunity will be coded as “excused” whereas others will be coded as “unexcused.”

To make a request for prior approval, submit the above form to the Principal two weeks before the absence(s). The student is responsible for completing all missed work in addition to submitting a Student Educational Assignment as approved by the Principal in order to have the
absence coded as “excused.” All projects are due within 5 days of the student’s return to school.

Support resources for Students + Families:

Counselor Request Form: We wanted to share the Request to See a Counselor form with parents. (Students will have access to this link in Canvas as well.). Once a student completes the form either Ms. White or Ms. Buff (school counselors) will have the student called to the office. We're here to help!

MMS Resources Form: There are several resources available to our students and families. If a student is in need of the following, a parent or guardian can complete the form linked above:
  • a weekend food bag,
  • a toiletry bag,
  • a birthday bag,
  • join Rainbow Kidz (grief counseling) - read more here, or
  • school-based therapy services (Children's Hope Alliance is the provider)
One big change this year is that we no longer have access to give out shoes to students. The program has been stopped at the company level. If this changes in the future, we will let you and parents know.

**Please message either Ms. White or Ms. Buff if you'd like help for your student / family in any of the above areas. We are here to help!

Credit By Demonstrated Mastery
The Credit by Demonstrated Mastery (CDM) Fall application window is now open for 7th-11th graders. For 7th graders, the options are Math 1 or Spanish 1. For 8th graders, they can request CDM for almost any 9th grade course. 9th-11th graders can request CDM for almost any course. Students must complete this application and submit it to their counselor by Friday, Sept 18.

CDM allows students to “test out” of certain high school courses where they have already mastered the content. There are two phases. In Phase 1 students take an EOC Exam / final exam equivalent for the course. Students who earn the required score advance to Phase 2. In Phase 2, students complete a project to apply the skills and knowledge from the course. Students who successfully complete both phases will receive “Pass” credit for the course on their transcript.  Pass credits do not affect a student’s GPA, but do count toward required graduation credits.

Questions? Please email Ms. Maureen Fitzsimmons, secondary AIG coordinator (maureenfitzsimmons@mgsd.k12.nc.us)
