Greetings, Red Imp families -- I hope you've had a wonderful & relaxing summer break! This is Mr. Patrick Kosal, your proud MMS principal. I'm excited and privileged to share with our Red Imp families the first Community Newsletter for the 2026-27 school year!
Our community newsletters are sent out each Friday afternoon via Parent Square + posted on the MMS website. They will provide a "one stop shop" for families to know what's happening at the middle school.

As you may know, Mooresville Middle School participates in the nationwide WEB Program (Where Everybody Belongs), an organization whose sole purpose is to help rising sixth grade and new-to-MMS students feel comfortable and help them achieve success in their first year at Mooresville Middle School.
Students are encouraged not to bring backpacks, purses, or other like items as the day is quite active. Because the day is active, please make sure your child wears comfortable clothing that does not restrict movement. Lunch will be provided for students during 6th grade orientation.
Your child will receive a draft copy of their class schedule at orientation. If your child cannot attend orientation, don't worry -- parents receive access to their schedule via Parent Square on July 30.
Parents / guardians of Red Imp students are needed to volunteer for both school and district committees. Please consider giving some time and input to help make your child's school better!
Parent-Teacher-Student Organization (PTSO): support MMS teachers and students by fund-raising and giving back for the school community (monthly + events throughout the year)
School Improvement Team (SIT): meet with Mooresville Middle administration, teachers, and staff to continually monitor progress towards this year's goals for improvement
MGSD Calendar Committee: meets 2-3 times per year to set the district's calendar for 2027-28 school year
MGSD Parent Advisory Committee: meets 2-3 times per year to collaborate with our Superintendent and District Leaders about the direction of our district
Parent will receive access to view students' class schedules on July 30
MMS is unable to make schedule changes based on student / parent preference.

Mooresville Middle School holds its annual pre-school year Open House event on Monday, August 3rd from 5 - 7:00pm.
Red Imp parents & students will also have a chance to see & hear:
The MMS PTSO (parent-teacher-student organization) will have MMS spirit wear on sale & they'll collect information from families interested in helping out the PTSO this year.
The MGSD Transportation department will have a representative in the MMS cafeteria to answer questions from parents & students. Bus route information will be available for families at that time.
Athletics and after-school club information will be available.
student WEB leaders will be present to help direct traffic and serve as tour guides for students, upon request
School counselors will be present to set up meetings or give information to parents.
Crosby Scholars representatives will be here to discuss how CS can help Iredell county students save on college costs! (see below)
Our school nurse, Ms. Crenshaw, will be present to answer questions about student medications or health concerns.
Parents: please bring a screenshot / PDF / printout of your Red Imp's schedule so you can help them maneuver our campus. Please enter using the doors near the MMS gym / concession stand. We can't wait to see our campus full of Red Imp families on Monday, August 3rd!
Families --- to lessen the financial burden on parents, MMS is not requiring much in terms of general school supplies. You will find the recommended items in the photo below (or click here for a printable version), as well as the "wish list" for teachers.
At the August 3rd Open House and during the first week of school, individual classroom teachers may communicate specific supply needs for their class. Those specific supplies will also be found on the teachers' course syllabus in Canvas. Most work done by MMS students can be completed digitally, be done using the limited resources below, or students may use school-provided class sets of instructional tools.
The middle school day begins at 7:55am. Students may enter our building at 7:35am in order to get breakfast and find their way to Homeroom / 1st period.
Students will receive finalized, printed schedules in their Homeroom / 1st period class. Some schedules will be changed between Open House and day #1, so that's the final version that should be used.
If they're a morning bus rider, be sure your child knows their official MGSD bus stop location AND arrives 10 minutes early to make sure they don't miss their ride.
If your child plans to Walk / Ride Bike to or from campus, they MUST have a 2026-27 Walking Form Permission Slip signed by a parent and on-file in the main office. This is for safety reasons; we want to be sure parents understand the risks of students walking off-campus without staff supervision.
If students are morning car riders parents should please follow the Car Rider Protocols outlined below:
Car Rider Procedures at MMS:
Parents! We need your help keeping the car-rider line moving safely and efficiently! Please remember the following things when dropping students off OR picking students up:
When entering from Kistler Farm Rd, there will be TWO lines for cars to form. The staff member with the reflective vest (usually Asst. Principal Dr. Browning) will signal when it's your line's turn to pull up (see map below).
Do not stop to drop your student off by the awning -- we need cars to pull ALL THE WAY UP. Please follow the directions of the staff members on duty; they're there to help & keep traffic moving safely.
In the afternoon, students waiting for their ride must remain behind the yellow safety line on the sidewalk and should wait until their car comes to a stop before approaching.
It's great for students to socialize with friends, but they must stay alert and watch for their ride. When one car is excessively waiting, the whole line is impacted.
Please remind students that the front lawn of the school is still school property and therefore our MGSD Student Code of Conduct and MMS school rules still apply before / after school.

Transportation / Bus Info for families:
Attention: all transportation requests and changes must be submitted through each school's data manager to be entered into Infinite Campus. Requests will be processed and assigned in the order they are received. Please call the front office and ask for MMS data manager Ms. Cowan (704-658-2720), or email her instead (robincowan@mgsd.k12.nc.us)
Bus assignments and transportation information will be distributed to families via Parent Square at the end of July. All Transportation communication to families uses Parent Square, so be sure to have notifications turned on. It's also wise to download the Here Comes The Bus app for students / parents on their phone to see when buses are near their stop.
Requests submitted after July 23, 2026, may not have transportation available on the first few days of school as we process a large volume of requests. In those cases, families should be prepared to provide transportation for their child until a bus assignment can be established.
Anyone wanting to participate in optional workouts and/or tryouts MUST firstbe enrolled in Final Forms
Must have a valid athletic physical (on the STATE required form) uploaded to the students Final Forms account.

CROSS COUNTRY - 6th, 7th & 8th grade boys and girls (two separate teams). Official Tryouts begin:
Wednesday July 29th from 3:00 - 4:30pm at MMS. Check in at the MMS gym beginning at 2:30pm.
On Thursday July 30th and Monday and Tuesday August 3rd and 4th students should meet at Bellingham Park for tryouts/practice. Rides should drop them off and pick them up at Bellingham Park on these days.
Wear clothes and tennis shoes (running shoes if you have them) appropriate for running in the heat and also bring your own water bottle with your name on it.
TENNIS - 6th, 7th & 8th grade boys and girls (two separate teams). Official tryout dates for boys and girls tennis are:
Monday July 27th and 28th from 6:00 - 7:30pm. Possibly extended to Wednesday July 29th
Check in on Monday July 27th at the MMS gym beginning at 5:30pm
You need to have your own tennis racket and bring a water bottle with your name on it

Attending the optional workouts will help you to get into playing shape and help you prepare for the tryouts that begin on that Wednesday
Official tryout dates are July 29th and 30th also from 5:30 - 7:45pm

Attention rising 7th grade parents....
Your student is in need of a Meningitis vaccine and a Tetanus booster (Tdap) to start the 2026-2027 school year. There are two Meningitis vaccines available, Meningitis B is recommended while Meningococcal conjugate vaccine (MCV) is required. The deadline to send proof of vaccination is the first day of the 2026-2027 school year.
This may seem like plenty of time to have this completed but please do not wait until August to get these immunizations as you may not be able to find them due to the number of people that wait until the last minute. We can not offer extensions for these circumstances.
If you think your student has already received this vaccine or you are unsure of their vaccination status, please contact your doctor’s office and ask for a copy of the student’s immunization record. Please submit it to the MMS front office as soon as possible.
There are several options for your student to receive these vaccines including the health department, primary care provider and some urgent care centers. Here is the link for Iredell county's Mobile Health Clinic. In the past, some locations did not update the NC Immunization Registry so please ask for paper documentation and turn them into the front office at MMS. Keep a copy for your records as well.
Lastly, this is a NC State Law to comply with vaccination requirements. If your student does not have documentation of these required vaccinations within the first 30 days of school, your student can be excluded from school with unexcused absences until proof of immunization is received beginning September 4, 2026.
