Each month the Board of Education recognizes a student who makes an impact at their school in a special way. These students also lead the Pledge of Allegiance at the meeting.
Taitlyn Lanning, a student at Mooresville Middle School, was selected as the May 2026 Student of the Month. Her teachers, and the MMS Administrative team shared, "Taitlyn is friendly, kind-hearted, and always has a positive attitude with her peers, displaying the HEART of a Red Imp in all that she does. Academically, she is truly a hard worker who always contributes to classroom discussions. She is consistently engaged in each day’s lesson, completes her assignments on time, and asks questions if she doesn’t understand.
"Taitlyn’s also challenged herself this year, taking an Honors math class for the first time; it’s going so well that she’s chosen to also take Honors English next year in 8th grade!
"Taitlyn is also a star for Red Imp athletics, too: she’s been a standout three-season athlete in both 6th and 7th grade, participating in Cross Country, Basketball, and Soccer. Earlier this season, Taitlyn scored 3 goals in a single soccer game! She’s played a pivotal role in the success of the MMS girls soccer team the past two years! Most of all, her coaches and teachers rave about her positive attitude, a drive to get better, and welcoming sportsmanship towards everyone.
"Taitlyn very much exhibits the #All Heart nature of Mooresville Middle School, and we’re so proud that she’s a Red Imp! Congratulations, Taitlyn! "

MGSD believes the arts are an important aspect of developing the whole child. We enjoy the opportunity to honor an Artist of the Month at our Board of Education meetings each month.
For the Artist of the Month, Mooresville Middle School student, Nayyir Reed, was selected. Nayyir comes to school every day with a positive attitude. At the beginning of the Theatre semester he asked for two main acting roles, and he just volunteered to acquire a third role after being informed that one of his cast mates would not be returning.
His Theatre teacher, Mrs. Mangual says, “Nayyir is an excellent actor who is always willing to grow and is an absolute joy to work with.” In addition to being a great performer, Nayyir's Spanish 1 teacher, Ms. Gonzales, said: “He is kind, a positive influence on others and is always using his Spanish.”
Nayyir was also recognized by our ML teacher Mrs. Hamilton-Genson because he will often remember to greet her in Spanish even though she's not one of his teachers! Nayyir was seen performing with the 8th grade Theater culminating show as Dewey, the Scarecrow, and Bo in the play called When Bad Things Happen to Good Actors.
This is the second year in a row that Nayyir has had major roles in Mooresville Middle School theater performances. He has truly grown as a confident artist and stage performer and we hope he continues to express himself through art in the coming years. Way to go, Nayyir!

MGSD loves recognizing those employees who go Above and Beyond the Call of Duty for our children by representing our core values.
Ms. Lori Denzel, Lori Denzel, EC Teacher Assistant/Athletic First Responder , was selected as the May 2026 ABCD award recipient.
Ms. Lori Denzel personifies the “All Heart” message of Mooresville Middle School. She is fully committed to her work each and every day to our students, teachers, and athletes whom she positively impacts.
During the day, Ms. Denzel serves as a Teacher Assistant, helping our EC teachers modify and implement specially designed instruction for learners who may need more time, attention, and support than others. Her patience and consistency are both what makes her truly valued in the classroom and her students sometimes scream and laugh when they see her each morning, excited for what’s to come that day!
After school ends, Ms. Denzel serves as our MMS Athletic First Responder, closely working with our Athletic Director and School Nurse to ensure students are medically cleared to participate in sports, and receive the appropriate care if injured during a game. Ms. Denzel puts in countless hours watching practices, examining physicals from doctors, and providing on-the-field care for our Red Imp athletes.
The MMS instructional team nominated Ms. Denzel because she doesn’t come to us with problems; she brings us solutions of how our school could be better. And also because she isn’t afraid to dance and sing when morning arrival music is playing!
Her dedication to Mooresville Middle School and the people within the building is unmatched and she is a beacon of sunshine and fun for students and staff alike. Thank you, Lori Denzel, for giving an All Heart attitude towards all you do at Mooresville Middle School!

Each month the Mooresville Graded School District shines the Spotlight on staff, students, and community members for outstanding contributions to creating a better community!
At MGSD, one of the ways we celebrate our close-knit community is through our longstanding tradition of sharing birthday cards with all of our dedicated staff members.
This year, we wanted to make this tradition even more special by inviting students from across the district to submit their original artwork for the card's design. While we received many incredible submissions, one truly stood out.
We are thrilled to announce that we have selected Leila Tomosovich's artwork to be featured on the official MGSD staff birthday card for 2026-27! Leila is a 4th grade student at EMIS, and her art teacher, Ms. Michelle Corbett shared that, “she really is a wonderful artist, and so deserving of this honor!”
Congratulations, Leila! Thank you for sharing your artistic talent with us and helping bring a little extra joy to our staff all year long.

At MGSD, our family extends beyond our students and staff to include the incredible community partners who help keep our schools safe and welcoming.
Today, we want to take a special moment to recognize a beloved member of that extended family: K9 Officer Bella. After years of dedicated service with the Mooresville Police Department as one of our MGSD School Resource K9 Officers, Bella is officially hanging up her badge and heading into a much-deserved retirement.
Bella has been a part of the Mooresville Graded School District since December of 2019. At 9 years old, Bella has been a steady and important part of our safety efforts, while also becoming a familiar face to students and staff across the district. She has been a steadfast protector, a friendly presence in our hallways, and a source of comfort and joy for our students and staff alike. She showed up every day ready to work, did her job well, and didn't need much supervision, unless someone had snacks or lunch out on their desk.
We are incredibly grateful for her service, her loyalty, and the paw prints she has left on the hearts of our community. Please join us in thanking Bella, and her handler, Sergeant Walther, for their unwavering dedication to MGSD, and in wishing Bella a long, happy, and treat-filled retirement!

Celebrating students is part of who we are at MMS! Each month our 6th, 7th, and 8th grade teachers are asked to nominate students within their teams who personify the H.E.A.R.T. of a Red Imp.
