A Message from Mr. Kosal:
MMS is All Heart! Greetings, Red Imp families! This is Mr. Patrick Kosal, your proud MMS principal. Each May at the End-of-Year Awards Ceremonies, MMS students are recognized by their teacher teams for showing the HEART of a Red Imp (Honorable, Engaged, Accountable, Responsible, Tolerant). As our leadership team was planning for the year, we thought... why wait until May?!
This school year, MMS is asking different teacher teams of all three grade levels to nominate their HEART of a Red Imp students at the end of each month. Those students will earn certificates of achievement, be recognized on social media & on AM announcements, and Mr. Kosal will buy them a pizza party lunch so they can share what's GREAT about MMS and what we can do better. If you know the students celebrated below, be sure to praise them for making a positive impact at Mooresville Middle!
Here's what you'll find in this week's newsletter:
- Fall fundraiser for MMS: selling chocolate bars
- HEART of a Red Imp -- August student recognitions
- Alino's Pizza hosting Spirit Night -- next Monday, 9/15
-
Want MMS spirit gear?? The PTSO swag store is now OPEN online
- Fall Festival on 9/26 -- PTSO needs Vendors + Raffle Baskets
- Credit by Demonstrated Mastery information
- latest ImpTV news broadcast
- Home athletics events at MMS next week
- info on the Science Club / Sound to Sea field trip (Feb. '26)
- Teacher Celebrations for the month of September
- Launch for the weekend: Navigating Middle School Friendships
- and more!
Thanks for reading! If you have questions or concerns, please email our administration team or call the MMS front office. I hope your family has a great weekend, Red Imps!

This past week began our MMS fall Chocolate fundraiser! Students received a flier of information about this fundraiser (link above to print another). Them selling delicious chocolate to friends & family could help them win some awesome incentives and fantastic prizes! For example:
Grade Level Top Seller: The top seller in each grade level will win a pair of wireless Beats headphones!
Sell 3 Boxes, Get a Gift Card: Any student who sells three full boxes will earn a gift card!
Teachers will send students who have a signed permission slip to the back of the media center (testing room) each day before school starts to claim their chocolate they’re committing to sell. This school fundraiser runs until October 8th. Thank you, Red Imp families, for your support!

Important Reminder Regarding Student ID Badges:
Student ID badges are an essential part of daily school life, enabling students to quickly access essential services like purchasing lunch, using our library, and entering school-sponsored functions. Please ensure your child keeps their ID badge in a safe place.
* All new-to-MMS students (including this year's 6th graders) received an ID badge free of charge. However, in the event that a student's ID badge is lost or damaged, a replacement can be obtained for a fee of $2.00. This fee helps cover the cost of producing and replacing the badge.
** Click Here to submit a request for a new ID badge to be made for your child.
We appreciate your cooperation in helping us maintain a safe and efficient school environment for all our students. If you have any questions, please contact the main office.

Credit by Demonstrated Mastery information for parents:
The Fall window for Credit by Demonstrated Mastery application is now open. This CDM newsletter below will go out via ParentSquare to all 7th-11th grade families and counselors on Sept. 2. Applications are due to counselors by Friday, Sept. 19.
CDM allows students to “test out” of certain courses where they have already mastered the content. There are two phases:
- In Phase 1 students take an EOC Exam / final exam equivalent for the course. Students who earn the required score advance to Phase 2.
- In Phase 2, students complete a project to apply the skills and knowledge from the course.
- Students who successfully complete both phases will receive “Pass” credit for the course on their transcript. "Pass" credits do not affect a student's GPA, but do count toward required graduation credits.

Tardy to School policy (from MMS Student / Parent Handbook):
The MMS tardy-to-school policy for the 2025-26 school year reads as follows:
1st, 2nd, 3rd Tardy - Parent Square notification from school to parents
4th & 5th Tardy - Lunch Detention assigned with notification from school
6th Tardy - Office Referral (assigned in-school-suspension OR after-school detention**)
(7th tardy+ resets to warnings --> lunch detentions --> office referrals)
Students must be in the building when the tardy bell rings at 7:55am to begin their school day. After 7:55am, student tardies will be logged and parents will be contacted for warnings. Parents will be notified via Parent Square message when their child is late to school. The above consequences will likely follow after the fact.
* Note: bus-riders on late buses are exempt from these consequences; that tardiness is an MGSD issue. If you need a bus route set up for your student, please click here to get more info about the MGSD Transportation department.
Parents: please be mindful of our 7:55am start time and help our Red Imps get to school on time each day so we can take advantage of every moment for learning!

How to alert MMS of student absence:
The email address for parents to alert MMS about student absences is:
MMSAttendance@MGSD.k12.nc.us
Parents can upload doctor's notes as well. This process helps to avoid lost excuse notes!
|
|
Note: Students may have up to a maximum of 3 days per school year excused to take advantage of valid educational opportunities. Prior approval from either the Principal is required. Absences that are classified as a valid educational opportunity will be coded as “excused” whereas others will be coded as “unexcused.”
To make a request for prior approval, submit the above form to the Principal two weeks before the absence(s). The student is responsible for completing all missed work in addition to submitting a Student Educational Assignment as approved by the Principal in order to have the
absence coded as “excused.” All projects are due within 5 days of the student’s return to school.
