Award Winner at MMS: dance teacher Ms. Thompson.
Ms. Carly Thompson has been celebrated by our entire school district and state because she’s the winner of this year’s Excellence in Dance Education Award, sponsored by Belmont Abbey College!
There were over 30 teachers nominated from around the state, and over 1,500 votes cast. It was reported that Ms. Thompson had the most votes by far! Her award comes with a $1,000 grant that will help support the Dance Education programs at both Mooresville Middle and Selma Burke Middle Schools.
Here are some affirmations passed onto the college about Ms. Thompson:
- student: She is very patient when teaching us choreography and she is very kind and encouraging towards all of us!;
- student: Ms. Thompson is kind, patient, and makes dance class fun. It doesn't matter what level you're at, she helps you be the best you!;
- parent: Mrs. Thompson is an excellent teacher. She has encouraged, empowered, and lifted my teen girl up when she’s had a hard year. My child loves going to her class and has learned a lot about dance and herself. She is more confident because of Mrs. Thompson.
Ms. Thompson will receive her Excellence in Dance Education Award at Belmont Abbey College on Friday April 4th during their Dance Showcase performance. Be sure to celebrate our amazing dance teacher Ms. Thompson for this huge accomplishment!

Reminder of MMS policies -- outside food / drink + ski masks
Parents & students: Mooresville Middle School is seeing an uptick in students bringing in fast food breakfasts into school. Our policy, which matches other MGSD secondary schools, is that no outside food / drink can be brought in for breakfast or lunch. Either students should eat breakfast before they enter school, or they can purchase school-issued breakfasts. This is because a) our School Nutrition department as a "no-compete" policy, and because b) outside food / drink is often a distraction with other students.
Another reminder: drinks MUST be have a sealable lid to be carried with students. This is to prevent very costly damage to laptops due to spills, which has happened often.
Thank you, parents for your support with this!

Panorama student surveys - next week!
Our last round of Panorama student surveys is around the corner (week of 3/24/25)! Our district has again partnered with Panorama Education to help us deliver this online survey, which is 100% anonymous. The survey questions will ask students their opinions on topics relating to teacher effectiveness, student engagement, classroom climate/safety, rigorous expectations, teacher/student relationships, and Portrait of a Graduate interpersonal skills. The overall aim of this survey is to receive student feedback that MGSD and Mooresville Middle can use to improve our classrooms and school. Please call / email Mr. Kosal (principal) with any questions.

Middle School can be a challenging time for many adolescents. The article below from Strong4Life.com (parenting group out of Atlanta) highlights developmentally normal changes in middle school students AND gives tips on how parents can help navigate those changes. Examples:
- Changes in school routines / expectations
- Emotional changes
- Having hard conversations
- Being ready to Listen
- Allowing students to make mistakes
- Managing "power struggles"
Wonderful food for thought!
