MGSD CALENDAR CHANGE DUE TO MAY 1 MARCH FOR STUDENTS AND RALLY FOR RESPECT IN RALEIGH
Mooresville, NC -- The Mooresville Graded School District is announcing a calendar change due to a state rally for educators taking place on May 1, 2019. There will be NO SCHOOL for students on Wednesday, May 1, 2019. This day is now designated as an optional teacher workday. Because of this change, Wednesday, May 8, 2019, will now be a full instructional day following a regular schedule. There will be no early release as previously planned. MGSD has closely monitored the number of teachers who have requested to take a personal leave day to attend the rally. As of this morning, we have approximately 110 staff requesting leave which is over 25 percent of our instructional staff. As a result, we do not have enough substitute teachers and other staff to safely supervise and effectively instruct students during the school day.
MGSD realizes this is a busy time in the school year, and we understand the burden school schedule changes can create for our families. We want our families to know that we have put much thought and consideration into this decision. Our teachers are not just taking the day off but advocating for public education, including our children.
If parents utilize the Before and After School Program (BASP), care will be available; however, slots are limited so reservations will be required. Director Cindy Karriker will share more information about May 1 childcare with our BASP families.
For questions regarding this change in schedule, please contact the MGSD Central Office at 704-658-2530. MGSD thanks you for your support and understanding.
